Order of Worship

Prelude

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor.
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?

It’s a neighborly day in this beauty wood,
A neighborly day for a beauty,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?

I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you,
I’ve always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.
So let’s make the most of this beautiful day,
Since we’re together we might as well say,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won’t you be my neighbor?
Won’t you please,
Won’t you please?
Please won’t you be my neighbor?

The Rainbow Song

Red and yellow and pink and green
Purple and orange and blue
I can sing a rainbow,
sing a rainbow,
sing a rainbow too.
Listen with your eyes,
Listen with your ears,
and sing everything you see,
I can sing a rainbow,
sing a rainbow,
sing along with me.

Sentences of Scripture & Welcome

Call to Worship

As a mother comforts her child,
so will I comfort you, says the Lord.

Worship the Lord in the beauty of God’s holiness.
Let the heavens be glad,
and let the earth rejoice.

Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
the world and those who live in it.

Let the floods clap their hands,
let the hills sing together for joy at the presence of the Lord.

Come, let us worship God.

† Hymn #14, “For the Beauty of the Earth”

1.  For the beauty of the earth,
for the glory of the skies,
for the love which from our birth
over and around us lies:

Refrain:
Lord of all, to thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.

2. For the wonder of each hour
of the day and of the night,
hill and vale, and tree and flower,
sun and moon, and stars of light: (Refrain)

3. For the joy of ear and eye,
for the heart and mind’s delight,
for the mystic harmony
linking sense to sound and sight: (Refrain)

4. For the joy of human love,
brother, sister, parent, child,
friends on earth, and friends above,
for all gentle thoughts and mild: (Refrain)

5. For thyself, best gift divine
to the world so freely given;
for that great, great love of thine,
peace on earth and joy in heaven: (Refrain)

Call To Confession

Prayer of Confession

O God of life, you created us in your image to care for one another and for all creation. Forgive us for turning away from you, ignoring the needs of our neighbors and the cries of the earth. In your kindness, forgive our sin, set us free from guilt and anxiety and make us strong to live our lives in love. As the sun brings light and warmth to this earth, make us signs of your grace.  Through the One who is our light and life we pray. Amen.

Silent prayer.

Hymn #792, “There Is a Balm in Gilead”

Refrain:
There is a balm in Gilead
to make the wounded whole;
there is a balm in Gilead
to heal the sin-sick soul.

1. Sometimes I feel discouraged,
and think my work’s in vain,
but then the Holy Spirit
revives my soul again. (Refrain)

2. Don’t ever feel discouraged,
for Jesus is your friend,
and if you lack for knowledge,
he’ll not refuse to lend. (Refrain)

3. If you cannot preach like Peter,
if you cannot pray like Paul,
you can tell the love of Jesus
and say, “He died for all.” (Refrain)

Scripture: Isaiah 25:6-9; Micah 6:8

Meditation: Rev. Dorothy L. Boulton

Anthem: “Rainbow Connection”

1.   Why are there so many songs about rainbows,
And what’s on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
And rainbows have nothing to hide,
So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it.
I know they’re wrong; wait and see.
Some day we’ll find it, the rainbow connection—
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

2.  Who said that every wish will be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that and someone believed it.
Look what it’s done so far!
What’s so amazing and keeps us stargazing?
And what do we think we might see?
Some day we’ll find it, the rainbow connection—
The lovers, the dreamers, and me.

Bridge:

All of us under its spell.
We know that it’s probably magic.

Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices?
I’ve heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that called the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same.
I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it.
It’s something that I’m supposed to be.
Someday we’ll find the rainbow connection—
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Someday we’ll find it—the rainbow connection—
the lovers, the dreamers, and me.

Sacrament of Communion

Invitation

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Communion Prayer

Sharing the Bread and the Cup

Prayer after Communion

Holy God, we thank you for this feast of grace and life.
As we have been served, help us to serve our neighbors.
As we have been fed, help us to feed all who are hungry.
As we have been loved, help us to love the world—
because in Christ Jesus, you have loved us. Amen.

Prayers of Thanksgiving,
Intercession, and the lord’s prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power
and the glory, forever. Amen.

† Prayer of commendation

† Hymn #649, “Amazing Grace”

1. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.

2. ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!

3. Through many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come.
‘Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.

4. The Lord has promised good to me;
his word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be
as long as life endures.

5. When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
bright shining as the sun,
we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
than when we’d first begun.

† Benediction

Following the service, please join the family for a reception in the Fellowship Hall.

Postlude: “Goin’ Home, ‘From the New World’”

Goin’ home, goin’ home,
I’m a goin’ home;
Quiet like, some still day,
I’m jes’ goin’ home.

It’s not far, jes’ close by,
Through an open door;
Work all done, care laid by,
gwine to fear no more.

Mother’s there ‘spectin’ me,
Father’s waitin’ too;
Lots o’folk gather’d there,
All the friends I knew.

Home, home, I’m goin’ home!

Nothin’ lost, all’s gain,
No more fret nor pain,
No more stumblin’ on the way,
No more longin’ for the day,
Gwine to roam no more!

Mornin’ star lights the way,
Res’less dreams all done;
Shadows gone, break o’day,
Real life jes’ begun.

Dere’s no break, ain’t no end,
Jes’ a livin’ on;
Wide awake, with a smile
Goin’ on and on.

Goin’ home, goin’ home,
I’m jes’ goin’ home.
It’s not far, jes’ close by,
Through an open door;

I’m jes’ goin’ home.
Goin’ home.
