Service for the Lord’s Day

Gathering around the word

Prelude: Jesus Loves Me, This I Know, arr. Paul Johnston

† Call to Worship

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble.

God is present when every morning dawns, bringing peace in the midst of chaos.

Be still and know that God is here. God shelters us when the earth is shaken.

Let us worship the faithful One, whose steadfast love endures forever.

† Hymn #8, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save”

Prayer of Adoration

Call To confession

Prayer of confession

O God, we spend our lives surrounded by turmoil: by violence on the streets, by wars all around us, by losses of health or jobs or loved ones, by needs we cannot meet, by pain we cannot relieve, by fear we cannot calm.

Forgive us for doubting you. Draw us back to a place of stillness where we can trust your love to soothe our panic and empower us. Then strengthen our voices to proclaim your praise.

Silent prayer of confession.

Assurance of Pardon

Hear the good news: When we find ourselves shaken and unsettled by the storms of life, God is with us. Let us claim the promise that nothing in life or in death will be able to separate us from the love of God.

As we build lives of faithfulness to God’s will, the gospel comes alive in us, and the storms of life will not destroy us.

Friends, through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
Thanks be to God!

Prayer of Illumination: Hymn #184, “Calm to the Waves”

Scripture: Psalm 107:1-3, 23-32

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever.

Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, those he redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.

Some sailed over the ocean in ships, earning their living on the seas; they saw what the Lord can do, his wondrous works in the deep.

He commanded and a mighty wind began to blow and stirred up the waves. The ships were lifted high in the air and plunged down into the depths; in such danger the sailors lost their courage.

They reeled and staggered like drunkards, and were at their wits’ end. Then they called to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.

He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. He brought them to a safe port. They were glad because of the calm.

Let them thank the Lord for his constant love, for his wonderful works to humankind.

Let them proclaim his greatness in the congregation of the people; with songs of joy let them tell all that God has done.

Hymn #184, “Calm to the Waves”

Scripture: Mark 4:35-41

On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion, and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And waking up, he rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Be silent! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Sermon: “Wondering If God Cares”, Rev. Moffett Churn

Responding to the Word

† Hymn #653 (verses 1-3, 5-6), “Give Thanks to God Who Hears Our Cries”

Call to Offering

Offering of Tithes and Gifts

OffertorY: Theme and Variation 1 from Impromptu in B-flat, Op. 142, no. 3, Franz Schubert

† Doxology #607, “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow”

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Christ, all people here below;
Praise Holy Spirit evermore;
Praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen.

† Prayer of Dedication

Loving God, through these offerings we turn away from our fear of scarcity to celebrate your promise of abundance. Bless everything we invest in your realm – all our gifts of time and skill and treasure – until resurrection resounds in our lives and throughout the world. We pray in Christ’s name. Amen.

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power
and the glory, forever. Amen.

† Hymn #837, “What a Fellowship, What a Joy Divine”

† Benediction

Postlude: O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing with Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above, arr. Mary K. SalleE
