Service for the Lord’s Day

Gathering around the word

Prelude: Be Thou My Vision, arr. Jason Tonioli

† Call to Worship (Psalm 103:1-5, 22)

God comes searching for us, seeking our response;
God rescues us from the shadows of our scattered places.

The worship of God restores our souls;
the righteousness of God calms our fears.

God lifts us up to the mountain heights;
here we are strengthened for life in the valley.

Evil and death hold no terror for us;
surely God’s goodness and mercy will follow us.

† Hymn #409: “God Is Here!”

Prayer of Adoration

Call To confession

Why do we confess our sin?
We have all missed the mark for what God wants for us.

Why do we do this together?
We are a community. If one of us suffers, we all suffer;
If one of us rejoices, we all rejoice.

Prayer of confession

Lord Jesus, we want to follow you, yet we hesitate to take up the cross. We want to take our rightful role as your disciples, but at every hint of defeat or disapproval, we have sought out our hiding places. We want to enjoy the abundant life you offer us, yet we recoil from the sacrifice you require. Look upon us with compassion, and unite us, not only in the fellowship of your suffering, but also in the power of your risen life right now.

Silent prayer of confession.

Assurance of Pardon

Jesus poured out his life and faced death to save us from everything that breaks right relationship – with God, with each other, and with our best selves. Praise God for the truly Holy and Human Jesus Christ, by whose saving action we are forgiven, and forever changed.

Thanks be to God!

† Response

I have decided to follow Jesus, I have decided to follow Jesus,
I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back.

The world behind me, the cross before me…

Though none go with me, I still will follow…

Prayer of Illumination: Hymn #288, “Spirit of the Living God”

Scripture, Mark 6:7-30

The Mission of the Twelve

He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff: no bread, no bag, no money in their belts, but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. They cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

The Death of John the Baptist

King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’s name had become known. Some were saying, “John the baptizer has been raised from the dead, and for this reason these powers are at work in him.” But others said, “It is Elijah.” And others said, “It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.”

For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her. For John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests, and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.” And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.” She went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the baptizer.” Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” The king was deeply grieved, yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

The apostles gathered around Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught.

Call to Offering

Offering of Tithes and Gifts

OffertorY: Elegies for Clarinet and Piano, movement 1: “Song for Bert”, Peter Schickele

† Doxology #607, “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow”

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Christ, all people here below;
Praise Holy Spirit evermore;
Praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen.

† Prayer of Dedication

Lord, we want to be faithful disciples, ready to do whatever you tell us and to go wherever you send us. Accept our offerings as a sign of our trust that, when we have come to a full stop or reached the end of our resources, yours is the kingdom of possibility, yours is the power to turn dead ends into open doors, and yours – not ours – is the glory, forever. Amen.

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power
and the glory, forever. Amen.

† Hymn #826, “Lift High the Cross”

July Fundraiser for Women’s Hygiene and Health

Again this year, the Mission Committee invites the congregation to participate in a fundraising campaign for women’s hygiene kits, in association with Church World Service (CWS). It is estimated that in this country alone, two out of every five women and teens lack the financial resources or access to meet their monthly hygiene needs such as tampons, napkins, and wipes. CWS prepares and distributes these kits, but its supplies are extremely low. CWS encouraged the Mission Committee to continue its efforts for women’s hygiene health. Last year, over $3,000 was raised.

The Mission Committee recommends a donation of $20 per hygiene kit, but any amount—greater or lesser—will be graciously accepted! Contributions can be made by cash, check, online giving, or the QR code displayed at the display table. Members of the Mission Committee will be available in the France Room every Sunday in July after church to share information and accept contributions.

Upcoming Concert: Ann Quinn and Friends

On Sunday, July 14 at 3 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, Clarinetist Ann Quinn presents a program of chamber music. This concert includes six of Max Bruch’s 8 Pieces for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano and elegies by Peter Schickele and Gabriel Fauré. Quinn is joined by Scott Hempling and Walter Atha.

Please RSVP to the church office no later than August 4. We will need a few people to bring dessert – if you are willing to do so, please let Stephanie know! You are also welcome to bring games of your own.

This event will be held rain or shine. If it is over 90 degrees or rainy, we will move inside to the Fellowship Hall.

Backpacks for Success

Many students in our community who lack equitable access to suitable school supplies. Backpacks, pens, pencils, markers, crayons, and rulers are instrumental in preparing children for success. We’re calling on our members, friends, and Catonsville neighbors to support our local students through financial contributions and the purchase of new school supplies. All backpacks, school supplies, and financial contributions will be distributed to local schools.

The cost of a single, packed backpack is around $40, and the list of necessary supplies is listed below. You can support this project in three different ways:

  1. Financially contribute by scanning the offertory QR code and selecting “Backpacks” from the funds.
  2. Drop supplies off in the vestibule between the Fellowship Hall and sanctuary between now and Sunday, August 11.
  3. Bring supplies to the Friday food collections.

To see the supply list, visit tinyurl.com/cpc-backpacks. Thanks for supporting our local students and starting the year off with generosity!
