Prelude

Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier (“Dearest Jesus, We Are Here”), BWV 731, setting by Johann Sebastian Bach

Leibster Jesu, wir sind hier, is translated literally as “Dearest Jesus, we are here.” We are here to listen to you and to your word. The text for this Lutheran hymn was written in 1663 and the melody in 1664. The simplicity and gentleness of the melody lends itself to ornamentation, as you will hear in Johann Sebastian Bach’s setting of today’s prelude. The hymn is a prayer for illumination and ideal for the preparation of one’s mind and heart at the opening of worship.

*Call to Worship

(The congregation responds aloud with the bold text)

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.
Worship the Lord with gladness;
come into God’s presence with singing.

Know that the Lord is God.
It is God who made us
and we belong to God.

We are God’s people,
and the sheep of God’s pasture.

Enter God’s gates with thanksgiving, and into God’s courts with praise.

Give thanks to God and bless God’s name.

For the Lord is good;
God’s steadfast love endures forever,
and God’s faithfulness to all generations.

Come, let us worship God!

*Hymn #327: “From All That Dwell Below the Skies”

1. From all that dwell below the skies
let the Creator’s praise arise:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Let the Redeemer’s name be sung
through every land, in every tongue.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
Alleluia! Alleluia!

2. In every land begin the song;
to every land the strains belong:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
In cheerful sound all voices raise
and fill the world with joyful praise.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
Alleluia! Alleluia!

3. Eternal are thy mercies, Lord;
eternal truth attends thy word:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore,
till suns shall rise and set no more.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Prayer of Adoration

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon

Before God, with the people of God, I confess to my brokenness:
To the ways I wound my life, the lives of others and the life of the world,

May God forgive you, Christ renew you,
and the Spirit enable you to grow in love.

Amen.

Before God, with the people of God, we confess to our brokenness:
To the ways we wound our lives, the lives of others and the life of the world.

May God forgive you, Christ renew you, and the Spirit enable you to grow in love.

Amen.

*Response of Praise: Hymn #582, “Glory to God, Whose Goodness Shines on Me”

1. Glory to God, whose goodness shines on me,
and to the Son, whose grace has pardoned me,
and to the Spirit, whose love has set me free.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen.

World without end, without end. Amen.

Children’s Message

Prayer for Illumination

Gracious God, you spoke the world into being; speak now to our hearts.
By the power of your Spirit, make these ancient words live,
that we might be shaped into your people,
eager to share and embody your grace in our lives.

In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.

Scripture: Psalm 100

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.
Serve the Lord with gladness;
come into his presence with singing.

Know that the Lord is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise.
Give thanks to him; bless his name.

For the Lord is good;
his steadfast love endures forever
and his faithfulness to all generations.

Hymn #768, “We Are the Body of Christ”

[Refrain]
Somos el cuerpo de Cristo.
We are the body of Christ.
Hemos oído el llamado;
we’ve answered “yes” to the call of the Lord.
Somos el cuerpo de Cristo.
We are the body of Christ.
Traemos su santo mensaje.
We come to bring the Good News to the world.

[Stanzas]
1. Dios viene al mundo a través de nosotros.
Somos el cuerpo de Cristo.
God is revealed when we love one another.
We are the body of Christ.
Al mundo a cumplir la misión de la Iglesia,
Somos el cuerpo de Cristo.
Bringing the light of God’s mercy to others;
We are the body of Christ.

2. Cada persona es parte del reino;
Somos el cuerpo de Cristo.
Putting a stop to all discrimination;
We are the body of Christ.
Todas las razas que habitan la tierra,
Somos el cuerpo de Cristo.
All are invited to feast in the banquet.
We are the body of Christ.

3. Que nuestras acciones reflejen justicia;
Somos el cuerpo de Cristo.
Stopping abuse and relieving the hungry,
We are the body of Christ.
Vamos al mundo a cuidar su rebaño.
Somos el cuerpo de Cristo.
Serving each other we build up the kingdom;
We are the body of Christ.

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:12-31

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot would say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear would say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many members yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect, whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member, that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.

Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work powerful deeds? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

*Doxology #607, “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow”

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Christ, all people here below;
Praise Holy Spirit evermore;
Praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen.

*Prayer of Dedication

Holy God, you have given us what we need; indeed, you have given us more than we need. Accept this portion that we dedicate to your work. Grant that we might be blessed in turn as we see your reign at work in the world and in ourselves. Amen.

Hymn #309 “Come, Great God of All The Ages”

1. Come, great God of all the ages;
make your earthly mission known;
speak through every deed and person;
let your way and will be shown.
Guide the church to true commitment;
give direction now, we ask;
fit us for the work of building;
dedicate us to the task.

2. Come, Christ Jesus, flesh and spirit,
sure foundation, cornerstone;
help us form the church eternal;
may your vision be our own.
Send a message to each follower;
lead all people to your way;
urge us to strong faith and action
as we build the church today.

3. Come, great Spirit, in and with us,
tune our ears to hear your call;
through the moving of your presence,
let redeeming love recall
ministry in dedication,
love embodied in our deeds;
challenge us to do your bidding,
see your purpose, fill all needs.

4. Come, O come, in celebration,
household of the one true God;
in commitment and rejoicing
let us go where Christ has trod;
as we act in faith and reverence,
let us, Lord, the future see;
place us in the church triumphant,
now and for eternity.

Amazing Grace, arr. George Shearing

Sir George Albert Shearing (1919-2011) was best known as a British jazz pianist and is the composer of more than 300 songs. He was the ninth child of a poor family, blind from birth: his father delivered coal for a living and his mother cleaned trains. But there was a piano in the house, and from a young age he was drawn to music. Shearing became a huge hit in the US and his jazz-inflected sound was influenced by the Glenn Miller saxophone section. Please enjoy Shearing’s setting of “Amazing Grace.”
