Woodlands Work Morning

  • Date: Saturday, July 23, 2022
  • Time: 8:00am10:00am
  • Location: Woodland Sanctuary

Join us for an hour or two of garden work on Saturday, July 23. Starting at 8 am, before the heat hits. The focus will be on the area we cleared early this season. Although the new grasses have started well, the clearance of the unwanted broadleaf invasive shrubs/vines continues. Interestingly, there is also a lot of Shenandoah blackberry vines appearing too. We will need to put our heads together and decide if we want to try and manage these aggressive-growing vines in this area.

There is also the need to remove returning Canadian thistle from many areas, always a challenge. That could be an alternative challenge for someone on the 23rd. We also have the need to seriously trim some tree branches that are hanging low over pathways, if someone finds this an interesting challenge anytime. It is also necessary to clear back some of the growth around the young trees we are nurturing. String-trimmer would do the job nicely, for someone interested in this task.

No need to wait until the 23rd. If you have a little time in an early morning or evening, it is really a nice way to spend some time in weed control, while enjoying the proliferation of summer pollinator plants which are coming into bloom. Awesome displays.  The Joe Pye weed is particularly impressive in several areas and the summer woodland sunflowers are lovely!!Help is definitely needed to keep the gardens a favorable place for native plants to thrive.
