Poetry and the Christian Life

April might be National Poetry Month, but May is the month we begin exploring the relationship between poetry and the Christian life. The American poet Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) said, “The poet is the priest of the invisible” (Opus Posthumous). The poet helps us to see things we might otherwise miss. The poet summons us to feel our way into deeper experience. The poet assists in the illumination of truth.
Ann Quinn and I will choose a poem of the month. We invite you to read over it—slowly: chew on it, meditate on it, reflect upon it, even pray through it. And then once a month we’ll have time to just talk about the poem. Here’s our first poem, by Emily Dickinson (1833-1866):
“Tell all the truth but tell it slant”
Tell all the truth but tell it slant —
Success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth’s superb surprise
As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind —
