Adult Education: Cross Purposes

  • Date: Sunday, May 5, 2019
  • Time: 9:00am–10:00am
  • Location: Library

In this season of Easter, we will explore three basic questions: Why did Jesus die on the cross? What was accomplished in and through the cross? and What does his death (and resurrection) mean for the world today?Β  Basic, yet enormously complicated. Neither the New Testament nor the Church attempt to answer these questions with one voice. In fact, the Church has generated, at least, six different theories of atonement over the past 2000 years. They are: Moral Influence Theory, Ransom Theory, Christus Victor, Satisfaction Theory, Penal Substitution Theory, and Scapegoat Theory. What do you believe about the cross? Why? And what does the cross mean for you today? Led by Ken Kovacs.

  • May 5:Β  Christus Victor: The Earliest Theory
  • May 12:Β  Christ the Sacrifice: A Dead Metaphor?
  • May 19:Β  Facing the Abyss

A time of learning and lively discussion, led by our pastoral staff, guest speakers, and members of the congregation. Join us as we explore a range of diverse topics and issues of the day from a theological perspective.
